The Island Foods Story
In 1974, the first Island Foods Restaurant was opened in Dufferin Mall by Ruth and Ramasar Sawh. Arriving in Canada in 1968 and having no previous restaurant experience they were true entrepreneurs-driven by the dream of a bright future for themselves and their growing family.
Using fresh local ingredients that were readily available, Ruth created authentic recipes that would introduce Caribbean cuisine to Toronto. With dedication and charm Ruth and Ramasar invited customers to what soon became Toronto’s first Caribbean destination restaurant. A loyal following ensued throughout the years and they are so proud to see the success of Island Foods.
Today, we are still a family run business with a trusted brand that still uses Ruth’s recipes-a real dream come true.
